Jose Mourinho Walks Out of Press Conference Following Manchester United's Late Draw at Everton

Published on: 04 December 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho cut short his post-match press conference after a late Leighton Baines penalty consigned his side to their fourth straight Premier League draw at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Baines' late strike, brought about by a clumsy foul by Marouane Fellaini, gave Everton a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw that again frustrated Mourinho, who felt his side deserved to win the match.

Mourinho, who returned to the touchline on Sunday, having been forced to watch Wednesday's 4-1 League Cup win over West Ham at a 'secret location' due to a one game ban, expressed his displeasure at criticism of his side before walking out of the media briefing.

The former Inter bossfielded questions about his decision to introduce Fellaini, which ultimately cost United the game, and his side's failure to secure the results that he clearly feels their performances deserved.

However, he refused to pass judgement on the penalty decision,Fellaini's challenge on Idrissa Gana Gueye, and Marcos Rojo's two-footed first-half lunge on the same player, for which the Argentine was very lucky to escape a red card.

When asked whether United's failure to kill games off was of concern to him, Mourinho reacted angrily, commenting on what he perceives to be the double standards used to judge his teams.

"[The media] have to make a decision," Mourinho retorted. "When my teams are playing [pragmatic] football, and winning matches and winning titles, [the media] say that is not right and nice.

"When my teams, like now, play very, very well, there is a huge change in relation to the past two or three years, now you say what matters is to get a result, [no] matter what," he claimed, clearly irked by the criticism of his management style from certain quarters down the years.

"At this moment, in the Premier League, we have teams getting results that defend with eleven players, kick ball and attack the space [on the] counter attack, it's phenomenal, it's beautiful.

"You need to make a decision, you need to make a decision..." the Portuguese fumed, before inaudibly continuing to vent his frustrations on the way out of the press conference.

Not the actions of a happy man, and not for the first time this season where Mourinho is concerned.
