Jurgen Klopp Insists That Liverpool Were 'Clearly Better' in Late Merseyside Derby Win

Published on: 19 December 2016

Jurgen Klopp was eager to put across his belief that Liverpool had outplayed Everton in their 1-0 victory at Goodison Park, where a Sadio Mané strike in the fourth minute of injury time proved the difference.

The win puts Liverpool second in the Premier League table, though they trail Chelsea by six points.

"We were clearly better, we could have scored earlier," Klopp toldBBC Sport. "We had a lot of chances but more importantly we didn't give one chance away, I think."

"A wonderful feeling, everything good." he enthused of Sadio Mané's late goal.

"The atmosphere was good, and of course it was a long extra time because of the injury to Stekelenburg but again, we gave them no chances."

Ross Barkley committed to an extremely ugly challenge on Jordan Henderson which could have snapped the skipper's leg in two, but only received a yellow card.

Points won over the last two Premier League gameweeks:

"I saw it, and I think everything is clear. I always say it how it is. I think the referee had a difficult game today and did really well, but maybe he (Barkley) was lucky."

Mané's goal was a crucial one for Liverpool's title ambitions, as the title picture sets in over the Christmas period. Klopp will be without him soon, though, as he departs for the African Cup of Nations.

"Everybody will ask usin two weeks' time how we will deal without him, but that's how it is. Football is a game you can always win, it's not about the players you miss but the players you have."
