Kaka sets Rossoneri goal

Winning the Europa League could be the catalyst for Milan to return to the glory days, according to Kaka.

The Rossoneri have endured a tumultuous summer and in June were banned from European competition for a year for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations, only to be reinstated on appeal.

With the club having been plagued by instability in recent years, Gennaro Gattuso will hope the board sticks with him for a full season as he plots to guide the team back to their former glories.

It'll be a very fascinating competition and winning it could be crucial.

Gattuso won two Serie As and a pair of Champions League titles during his playing career at San Siro but for now the best Milan can hope for is glory in Europe's second-tier competition.

The Italian giants have never won the Europa League or the UEFA Cup but success would restore some of their previous prestige after a tough few years.

Kaka was part of the side that won the Champions League in 2007, a success that helped him claim that year's Ballon d'Or.

The 36-year-old believes his old club needs something to reignite their fortunes and feels the Europa League provides the perfect opportunity for success.

"Milan are a team who are seriously trying to regain their place at the top," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "It won't be necessary to neglect the Europa League: when the teams eliminated from the Champions League arrive, it'll be a very fascinating competition and winning it could be crucial.

"I understand the fans, I'm one of them, but being successful again is the first objective and winning [the Europa League] would lead to the European Super Cup.

"The objective is to rebuild, but it would be great if we immediately started winning again."

Milan are 20/1 to lift the trophy next May in Baku, with Chelsea 7/1 and Arsenal 9/1.
