Klopp: Liverpool have 'defending approach' rather than attacking

Steve Nicol and the FC crew explain why they give Liverpool average marks for their performance so far this season.

Jurgen Klopp says his Liverpool side's first thought is to defend, dismissing suggestions his players are only focused on attacking.

Liverpool's defensive issues were highlighted again during Friday's 3-3 draw with Arsenal, although Klopp believed the goals conceded in that game were down to individual errors, rather than collective issues.

Klopp is adamant that defending will be firmly in the mind of his players when they face rock-bottom Swansea City at Anfield on Tuesday.

When asked whether Liverpool's natural instinct was to attack, Klopp said: "No, that's not true. They want to defend first of all, because I know that's the basis for everything.

"The best thing is to defend with 10 offensive players, because when you have the ball then it's much more likely that you will score.

"That will never happen, but we are this kind of mixture. We conceded no counter-attacks on Friday, again. They had no real chances apart from those five minutes.

Liverpool saw their defensive issues cost them points again at Arsenal.

"We can't ignore that, but apart from that, not really. But on the other hand we created a lot and that's how football should be, then you win the games.

"We didn't here, but we know already that we have to take the hard way. It's our problem. That's why we are where we are.

"We have a defending approach. We probably played a 4-5-1 [against Arsenal] with a responsibility to defend, as long as the players do it then we can line up quite offensively player-wise. There's nobody on the pitch who is not involved with defending.

"They have to do what they have to do. The goals were not because they players weren't defending. The goals came because we let them cross, which is what happens in a football game. We let them shoot, and that also happens in a football game."

Meanwhile, Joe Gomez was particularly at fault for Alexis Sanchez's goal at Arsenal, which brought the home side back into match just seconds after Liverpool took a two-goal lead.

However, Klopp has praised the defender, who has made 20 appearances this season, insisting errors are part of a 20-year-old's development.

"Look at Joe Gomez," Klopp added. "So good, such a fantastic improvement, development, outstanding, played for the England national team, played for us and was superb.

"On Friday, first goal, third goal [at fault]. He showed a reaction like human beings do. He is still a young lad, he has to learn. That's how it is."
