Koreans rushed to buy Ghana Chocolates after Black Stars 'helped' South Korea progress to round of 16

Ghana-branded chocolate sales increased 46.5 percent on Saturday as Ghana assisted Korea in reaching the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Ghana Chocolates, a Lotte Confectionery trademark, had a 32.7 percent increase in sales over the weekend and a 46.5 percent increase on Saturday, only hours after Korea's last group stage match ended late Friday night.

The Korean national team advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Portugal on Friday night. However, it was also critical that Uruguay not score too many goals, which Ghana contributed to. Ghana was beaten 2-0 by Uruguay in the early hours of Saturday. If Uruguay had scored just one more goal, Korea would have been eliminated from the round of 16.

“I will buy an entire box of Ghana Chocolates,” read a post on Twitter, uploaded with images of the brand and Koreans holding Ghanaian flags.

South Koreans sought to express their gratitude to Ghana in various ways, such as by posting amusing memes on social media and changing their profile images to the Ghana national flag.

“I hereby declare myself a friend for life of Ghana,” read a post on Twitter.
