Kotoko's best eleven signings under Dr. Kwame Kyei

Published on: 01 May 2020

Asante Kotoko Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei's three-year mandate given to him by His Royal Majesty, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II to steer the affairs of the Ghanaian giants has elapsed.

The business mogul who took over from Paul Adu Gyamfi's administration has been relatively successful with the affairs of the club.

His success story will stem from the fact that he has been able to guide arguably the biggest football  club in Ghana to win two major trophies- MTN FA Cup and NC Tier One Competition trophy.

On the continental competitions, under his watch, has been able to lead the Two times Championships League Winners to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup competition something the club failed to do in a decade.

It is uncertain whether he will continue manage the affairs of the club following brouhaha revolving the team which has compelled the owner and life patron of the club, and occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II to form a three-member committee to investigate certain issues of the club.

I look at his best eleven players out of fifty-seven (57) he has recruited thus far for the Porcupine Warriors in a 4-3-3 formation.

Here's what I gathered as his best purchase for the club.

Goalkeeper- Kwame Baah

The former International Allies Sterling goalkeeper will tip the highest mark as the best acquired goalkeeper for Asante Kotoko under the auspices of Dr. Kwame Kyei ahead of Osei Kwame and Michael Abu. What makes him (extraordinary) than other goalkeepers is his grit to bench first-choice-goalkeeper Felix Annan this season which of course his competitors failed woefully.

Right Back- Augustine Sefah

There seems to be a tough competition here following what Christopher Nettey has been displaying recently. However, Sefa who was somehow rejected by archrival Accra Hearts of Oak just like Nettey, was signed by Steve Pollack has given his wonderful spectacle of himself, especially in matches against Hearts of Oak. His stature is no advantage. Moves forward and defend well.

Left Back- Daniel Darkwah

The former Black Stars 'B' and Aduana Stars captain will be picked ahead of youngster Evans Owusu, Isaac Amponsah, and Abass Mohammed. Though he suffered a lot of injuries, there was no nought in all the matches he featured for Asante Kotoko SC. The maddening left-back was a class of his own with amazing defending and attacking traits.

Centre back- Ismael Abdul-Ganiu

Abdul Ganiu will be counted amongst the best centre backs recruited by Dr. Kyei. The experienced defender joined Asante Kotoko from Karela FC following a seeming fulgent performance. He has since established solidity at backline of the defence ever since he joined Kotoko. He has innate shrewdness to read the games with timely interventions. He played a pivotal role when Kotoko qualified for the group stage of CAF Confederation Competition for the first in a decade.

Centre back- Emmanuel Agyemang Badu

The youngster from Phar Rangers has been the constant figure at the heart of defence despite changes in the technical department of the club. The ball-playing defender has got a spectacular confidence in playing big games. Badu's consistency will rest the likes of Wahab Adams, Awudu Nafiu, Habib Mohammed et al.

Central Midfield- Richard Senanu

The youngster created a gigantic vacuum following his injury until Management of the club secured Justice Blay onloan. He's mobile. Absolute Incredible to provide the necessary shield for the defense men and initiate attack by switching play to push the club forward. He's delight to watch.

Central Midfield- Kwame Bonsu

Popularly known as 'Conte' was overly mind-blowing during his days with Asante Kotoko. He braced the odds to put the pessimists who wrote him off his life in prison. Bonsu intelligence play won him many plaudits from Kotoko fraternity.

His connection with Senanu was scintillating and rock.

Central Midfield- Maxwell Baako

He's not just called 'Messi' for nothing.  There's no nought in his play. Baako is the translucent forest creature who moves like a ballroom dancer ,and a prolific passer capable of urging the ball forward by letting it run through legs.

Left wing- Abdul Fatau Safiu

His incredible pair with Songné Yacouba won Asante Kotoko NC Tier one Competition trophy and pushed Kotoko to CAF Confederation cup group stage. Fatau is one of the few players in recent times distinguished himself in superlatives by the virtue of his spectacularly phenomenal showings and wherewithal to hit the back of the net. He's an expert in Free-kick.

Forward- Sadick Adams

Magical Sadick Adams in 2017 MTN FA Cup final against bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak, singlehandedly annihilated them in a magnificent manner for Kotoko to win the final through his hat trick. Adams again won Asante Asante Kotoko a President Cup against Hearts through his last panenka penalty.

Right wing- Songné Yacouba

The Burkinabe international was a  rocambolesque type of striker  who brought infinite hope to Asante Kotoko SC supporters to chance on it to anticipate something worthwhile in the future. He was central goal-block obstacle. Amazing foul-runner. High-class goal-angry scuffle-man. He is astute at taking the ball under pressure and turning or linking. One that creates chance for himself in difficult areas.
