Lampard: Liverpool boss Klopp needs to buy specific players in January

Published on: 08 December 2017

Liverpool managed to secure a position in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, ending the group stage with a thumping 7-0 win over Spartak Moscow.

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is an admirer of Liverpool's attacking talent, but believes the club needs strengthening in other positions.

"It's a good squad, it's just slightly weak in really important areas as we keep saying," he said.

"Yes (they've got to make signings in January). Yeah I think they will do that, in terms of the Champions League they've got to pick somebody who's not playing in it currently so you can use them in the next stage."

Signing cup tied players is always an issue for top clubs in January, given players who featured in the Champions League for one club cannot play in the competition for another.

Lampard believes that the Reds will get need to get it right in terms of January recruitment.

"I think they will do, there will be players available," he said.

It will be interesting to see whether Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reprises his interest in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, after failing to land his primary defensive target in the summer.
