Manchester United have defeated Sampdoria 2-1 in Dublin, thanks for a late goal from Juan Mata.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan's early opener was cancelled out in the second half by Dennis Praet, but substitute Mata fired home with nine minutes remaining.

United uncharacteristically, given their focused pre-season, begun nervy in the Irish capital, with Daley Blind's mindless backless forcing David De Gea to make a last-resort save.

However, Jose Mourinho's side would take the lead through Mkhitaryan, who finished off a devastating counter-attack on the ninth minute mark.

With 63 minutes gone at the Aviva Stadium, Sampdoria would find an equaliser when Praet finished calmly from the edge of the box.

In encouraging signs for United fans, Anthony Martial set up the winner for Mata, passing the ball for the Spaniard to place into the bottom left-hand corner.
