Legends sometimes also miss penalty - Ex-President Mahama consoles Asamoah Gyan

Former President John Mahama has lauded Asamoah Gyan for his services rendered to the country but has encouraged him to move on after his penalty miss against Uruguay.

In the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Black Stars were on the verge of playing in the semifinals of the Mundial for the first time.

In a quarterfinal game, Luis Suarez prevented Dominic Adiyiah's goalbound header with his hands.

The Black Stars were awarded a spot-kick but Asamoah Gyan failed to convert the spot-kick after striking the crossbar.

The South American side subsequently booked a place in the semifinals after a 4-2 win in a penalty shootout after extra time.

But the 2020 NDC flagbearer has praised the 36-year-old for his services and has urged him to move despite failing to convert the spot-kick.

“2010 was our opportunity but you know what Suarez did. We know that sometimes legends miss penalties,” Mahama said when Gyan and his team visited him to invite him to the launch of the veteran striker’s autobiography, titled ‘Legyandary’.

“It broke the heart of all of Africa and I’ve never forgiven Suarez for what he did but we put it behind us. We’ve done quite well," he added.

Gyan remains the country's all-time top goalscorer with 51 goals.
