Leicester City Star Riyad Mahrez Wins African Player of the Year Award

Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has been named the BBC African Player of the Year.


The Algerian put in a tremendous effort last season to help Leicester win the Premier League title, and now has them competing in the Champions League too.

He scored 17 goals and delivered 11 assists en route to the title win last season, and despite the champions' struggles this term, he really does deserve it.


The 25-year-old was voted for by fans across the globe, effectively beatingother top African players inPierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Andre Ayew, Sadio Mane and Yaya Toure to the prestigious award.


"It means a lot," he said toBBC Sportafter receiving the accolade.It's something big for African players so I am very happy, I am very proud.

"It's always good to receive awards and for African players it's a huge honour. To all the fans, thank you very much."


"Also I want to thank the Algeria fans and dedicate this to them as well and for my family.I just have to carry on and keep going with my football and see what I can do."
