The LFP — Ligue 1 administrators – have scrapped the plan to hold the Monaco-Lyon match in Shanghai in February, according to L'Équipe this afternoon.

The preparations were scrapped due to the licenses that would have been required to put on the event, as well as the Covid-19 travel limitations in place for China. Nonetheless, the LFP reminded L'Équipe that the goal of staging league matches abroad to "promote Ligue 1 worldwide" is still in place.

Despite the fact that the two clubs initially consented to the concept, Monaco vice-president Oleg Petrov and Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas quickly pointed out that the logistics of travel, quarantine, and the fixture list rendered it implausible in this particular scenario.

The league's authorities were said to be attempting to raise French football's international profile in reaction to its comparatively modest television rights deals outside of France - €73 million annually, compared to €710 million for Spanish football and €1.4 billion for English football.
