Liverpool Defender Joel Matip Awkwardly Admits He's Never Heard of Reds Legend Alan Hansen

After a string of impressively commanding performances at the back for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, Joel Matip is widely considered to be one of the bargains of the season.

The totemic, Cameroonian international was signed on a free, after leaving Schalke and has slotted seamlessly into the side's back four, helping the Reds to the top of the table before being displaced by Chelsea at the weekend.

Indeed, Matip's eye-catching form has drawn comparisons to Reds legend Alan Hansen, who won eight league titles and three European Cups at Anfield, but that hasn't necessarily flattered the new boy - ashe's never heard of the club's former captain.

"I'm sorry, I have to say I haven't heard of him. But I know this club has won many trophies in the past and has had many great defenders," Matip revealed during an interview with theLiverpool Echo.

Hansen enjoyed a wonderfully glittering career at Liverpool, acting as a key member during the club's golden era in the 1980s.

"But I know this club has won many trophies in the past and has had many great defenders," Matip added.

"It's an honour the fans have welcomed me so much and that they appreciate my game play. Knowing I have the supporters behind me is a pleasure.

"I hope I can continue to make the supporters proud.

"We are trying to make some history, but we have to work really hard for this. It's a long season, we will give our best and then we will see what we can achieve."

While Liverpool fans will be delighted by their new centre back's eagerness to replicate past successes, perhaps Mati can expect some books and DVDs about the club's illustrious history in his stocking this Christmas.
