Liverpool defender Joel Matip has been warned by the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot)that he could face 'action' after rejecting a call-up to the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 25-year-old centre back hasn't featured for his country since 2014, and is among seven players to have turned down the chance to join the provisional squad.

In a statement, quoted bythe Independent, Fecafoot said:Seven have called the coach by telephone to notify him of their unavailability.

Joel Matip does not want to play with the Lions at the moment due to a bad experience with the previous technical staff.

These players want to privilege their personal interest to the detriment of the national team, which some of them have already used for their development.

The Cameroon Football Federation reserves the right to take action against these players in accordance with Fifa regulations.

However, the coach wants to reassure the public that he will put in place the best team possible with players who are motivated and determined to defend the colours of Cameroon.

The statement also claimed that 'a bad experience with previous staff' was responsible for the decision of the players.

According to rules written by Fifa, players areas a general rule... obliged to respond affirmatively when called up by the association he is eligible to represent.

What action will be taken on Matip and his compatriots is unclear, although Liverpool will be hoping it has no affect on them.Having made 14 appearance so far this campaign, Matip has established himself as a crucial part of the Liverpool defence since his arrival in the summer.
