Liverpool icon Gerrard: Mourinho treatment of Man Utd fullback Shaw not personal

Liverpool U18 coach Steven Gerrard is convinced by the potential of Manchester United fullback Luke Shaw.

Shaw enjoyed a rare start in last night's win over Champions League opponents CSKA Moscow.

United boss Jose Mourinho has publicly criticised the 22-year-old several times for his fitness and performances and Gerrard believes he was only doing it for the benefit of Shaw.

“I think he's been strong at times but I think he's been doing it for a reason," he said.

“I think that's to try and get the best out of Shaw. He's obviously not happy with certain parts of his game or his fitness or maybe his body shape.

“Mourinho goes about it in a certain way, it's in a strong way but I don't think it's personal.

“I think it's just to try and get the best out of the player and I think all of us as England fans need to see him back playing on a regular basis because when he's on the top of his game he's quality and one of the best left-backs in the world."
