Liverpool Owner John Henry Hits Back at False Rumours of Imminent Anfield Takeover

Published on: 14 December 2016

Liverpool owner John Henry has rubbished speculation of an imminent Anfield takeover. It comes after talkSPORT's Ian Abraham had boldly claimed a deal for the sale of the would be agreed by Christmas and possibly even the end of the week.

"My sources are telling me tonight, the Liverpool takeover is expected to be completed before Christmas and possibly by the end of this week," Abraham tweeted on Tuesday.

The Reds have been linked with a high profile takeover for some time, with a rumour of an Abu-Dhabi-based buy out commanding plenty of gossip column inches earlier this year.

More recently the speculation has centred on a Chinese consortium and an £800m deal.

But Henry, who also controls Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, has now made it known that there is no truth to the latest rumour.

"Good that your sources will be debunked so soon. Usually it takes a long time!" the American tweeted in direct response to Abraham's initial claim.

Appearing to quickly accept that his information had been wrong, Abraham replied with, "Well, thank you for so swiftly clearing that [up], only reporting what I had heard - look forward to meeting you at Anfield one day."

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo back in August, chairman Tom Werner denied any plans for Fenway Sports Group to sell Liverpool despite interest from potential buyers.

"We've said it before and I'd like to say it again: this club is not for sale. I'd say that from time to time somebody says they have made an offer to us but they are really saying that just for publicity," he said.

"People throw offers to us which we don't think are real. We haven't had a discussion or a negotiation with anyone because this club is not for sale. If someone wants to write us a letter saying they want to buy the club then it will get put in the garbage."
