Liverpool are reportedly eyeing the possibility of signing promising Southampton midfielder Sam McQueen, according to theMirror.

The 21-year-old has been deployed as a left-back by Saints manager Claude Puel due to the ongoing defensive injury crisis, but has performed superbly since making this debut for his boyhood club.

One of many Southampton academy graduates to make their Premier League debut, the versatile midfielder has been one of the Saints' standout performers since making his full debut against Italian giants Inter Milan at the San Siron the absence of injured duo Matt Target and Ryan Bertrand.

His performances have alerted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, with reports suggesting the Reds are still intent on bringing in another left-back after their failed attempts during the summer transfer window.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss has deployed James Milner in the left-back berth for the majority of the season, with the much maligned Alberto Moreno acting as back up to the England international.

Leicester City's Ben Chilwellwas their primary target during the summer but their attempts were knocked back, with the Foxes putting a substantial asking price on the youngster.

According to reports, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri is also keeping tabs on McQueen, who has just 18 months left on his current contract.

The 21-year-old has spoken recently of his rise to the first team and insisted he will continue battling to keep his place in Puel's starting eleven.

He said: "You just have to worry about what's right in front of you, but I would hope that I would still stay with the first team and hopefully still get some game time.

I need to try and impress as much as I can in the games that I get, so hopefully if I get any more chances I need to do my absolute best.

I need to get forward as much as I can, defend well and do the things that the manager's asked."
