Liverpool's 19-year-old defender Joe Gomez finally returned to action on Sunday after over a year on the sidelines with an anteriorcruciate knee ligament injury.

The left-back suffered the injury in October last year playing for the England Under 21s, and only returned to training last month.

But he was able to complete a full half of football in a training ground friendly with Accrington Stanley at Melwood, which Liverpool won 5-0.

Manager Jurgen Klopp, quoted inthe Daily Mail, commented on his recovery: "It's a long way. He was injured for a long time and now it is a long way back, so there is no rush in it. He is still a young boy so we can give him time to come back in the right moment."

Gomez had established himself as Liverpool's first choice left-back at the time of his injury, following his £3.5m move from Charlton Athletic.

But he may find it difficult to take the place of JamesMilner, who has thrived in the position. The poor form of Alberto Moreno prompted Klopp to trythe former Manchester City midfielder in a new position, and it has, by all accounts, worked wonders.

Milner, Emre Can, Joel Matip, Lucas Leiva, Alberto Moreno and Loris Karius all played against Accringtonalongside a number of youngsters.

Academy talent Rhian Brewster scored a hat-trick, with Can and Harry Wilson also on the score-sheet.
