Liverpool's Adam Lallana Delighted With Rare Header in Man of the Match England Display

Published on: 11 November 2016

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana was the star of the show as England beat Scotland at Wembley on Friday, scoring a well taken but rare headed goal after Anfield colleague Daniel Sturridge had given the Three Lions the lead with a fine header of his own.

"I don't get many headers!" a delighted Lallana said after the game, while also quickly going on to praise the assist from Tottenham full-back Danny Rose.

"It was more about the cross - there was so much pace on it. I just had to get good direction and I found the bottom corner," he explained.

Lallana was also named Vauxhall Man of the Match for his performance in a win that puts England's World Cup qualifying campaign back on track after the lacklustre victory over Malta and poor draw with Slovenia last month.

Scotland certainly weren't without chances of their own - four big ones went begging - and Sturridge's opener for the home-team was something of a sucker punch.

The Liverpool man, who is yet to score in the Premier League this season but now has two goals in four England World Cup qualifiers since September, expertly directed a driven cross from Kyle Walker - a good night for Tottenham full-backs getting assists - high into the goal.

Earlier this week, Sturridge had been thechoice of 90min readersto lead the line as England's number nine. He topped a poll in which close to 44,000 fans had cast their vote, coming out with 33% ahead of Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy.

England, who remain unbeaten in qualifying games since October 2009 - a span of seven years, will now move on to face Spain in a friendly at Wembley on Tuesday.
