Liverpool's Jordan Henderson Will Captain England Against Spain as Wayne Rooney Drops to Bench

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will lead England out as captain for Tuesday night's international friendly against Spain at Wembley. It will be the second time the player has worn the armband during Gareth Southgate's interim time in charge.

Speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, Southgate confirmed that Henderson will start as captain in the absence of Wayne Rooney, who won't feature in the starting XI.

Rooney had returned as captain against Scotland after being left on the bench for the 0-0 draw with Slovenia last month, but it appears that Southgate is looking to make at least a few changes from the side that won 3-0 in Friday's World Cup qualifier.

That means Henderson, who has risen above Chelsea defender Gary Cahill in the captaincy pecking order since Southgate was named temporary successor to Sam Allardyce, will take on the role once more.

The Spain game will be Southgate's last in charge of his original four-game reign before a decision over a permanent new England manager is made.

Following the Scotland result, the 46-year-old is odds-on favourite with bookmakers to be given the job on a full-time basis, leaving behind his successful time with the Under-21 team. Barring an extremely poor showing against Spain, the rolelooks set to be his.

"He's done all he can and I'm sure he's the front-runner. From my point of view, he's in pole position," Rooney said when asked about the subject on Friday night.

Since beating Spain on penalties at the quarter-final stage of Euro '96, England have largely had a poor record against Tuesday's opposition.

Sven Goran Eriksson masterminded a 3-0 win in February 2001 with a Three Lions side that included the likes of Ugo Ehiogu, Chris Powell, Michael Ball and Gavin McCann, but Spain have won four of the last five contests between the two countries since.
