Los Angeles FC's Kwadwo Opoku included in Black Meteors squad for 2023 U23 AFCON

FC Los Angeles Football Club's Kwadwo Opoku Mahala has received a call up to Ghana's squad for the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This is the 21-year-old's first ever invite to any Ghana national team as one of 14 foreign based players named in Ibrahim Tanko's 29-man provisional squad on Thursday.

The 21-year-old has been phenomenal for Los Angeles last season and this season, seeing him win the 2022 Major League Soccer title and the 2022 Supporters' Shield.

In their 2022 title winning Major League Soccer campaign, Opoku Mahala scored 7 goals and provided two assists in 34 games, starting 20 of them.

This season, he has scored two goals and provided an assist in 13 games; 11 as a starter.

The winger will provide the team with a lot of options in attacker as he can player in all three front positions.

The team will leave Accra on Monday, June 12, 2023 for Cairo, Egypt where they will camp for two weeks and engage in series of friendlies before the competition.

The tournament is scheduled to start on June 24, 2023, and end on July 8 with the top three teams earning automatic qualification for the 2024 Olympics.
