Man City Full-Back Blasts Defensive Frailties and Demands Team 'Wake Up' Ahead of Xmas Schedule

Published on: 19 December 2016

Bacary Sagna has urged his Manchester City team mates to finally begin learning from the defensive errors that have cost them points in this season's Premier League title race.

Pep Guardiola's men find themselves seven points off table toppers Chelsea as the 2016/17 campaign enter its most crucial run of fixtures - the packed Christmas schedule - after they finally turned a corner, results wise, over the course of the past week.

City had suffered successive defeats to Antonio Conte's men and Leicester City - matches that saw the Citizens ship seven goals in total - before securing vital 2-0 and 2-1 victories over Watford and Arsenal respectively ahead of the festive fixture period.

Bacary Sagna. Time and again. Changes games.

After seemingly shoring up at the back, right-back Sagna now wants to see if City have learned from their mistakes, and expects better decision making and more communication between all of Guardiola's charges, as a defensive unit, no matter where each individual plays on the pitch.

He told Goal: "It's not only the defence, we defend all together and we attack all together.

We have to switch on as soon as we lose the ball. There were a few counter-attacks that went against us. We have to stick together and wake ourselves up, we have to communicate with each other more if we want to be successful and that's what happened in the second half [on Sunday].

"We have some character in the group, we have that in some vital players, and today we showed that is a vital part of this City team. I think everyone responded well when we needed to and in the end we deserved to be on top. With the players we have, the quality we have, we have to be on top.

"Every single game there is pressure. There was pressure on us because we kept losing and giving away many goals. Then there was pressure because we were playing Arsenal - a direct rival. But we can deal with that pressure quite well - and in the second half we showed that."

City travel to Humberside to face Hull on Boxing Day ahead of a crunch New Year's Eve trip to Anfield to take on fellow title challengers Liverpool.
