Man Utd boss Mourinho on battling Brighton win: No bad words for my boys

Manchester United eked out an underwhelming 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday.

Lewis Dunk's 66th-minute own goal separated the teams, after Ashley Young's shot took a big deflection off the Seagulls defender and looped into the far corner of the net.

The result means United close the gap on leaders Manchester City to five points, although Pep Guardiola's men can restore their eight-point lead on Sunday with a win at Huddersfield.

United boss Jose Mourinho refused to criticise his players in the post-match.

“We had amazing chances a couple of days ago and we couldn't score, today we did it. Congratulations to them for their performance, congratulations to my boys. My boys, they didn't play well but they gave everything. The boys, they don't deserve bad words from me.

"In the Champions League, we played some of the best football away from home in the first half and could have been 6-0 but it was 0-0. I am not happy with that but today we scored one and one goal was enough for the three points because in the end we speak about what we want but the points is the most important."

On Brighton, he added: “I want to be honest and give them what they deserve, for me, probably they deserve more than the result they got. They played really well, they had a good defensive organisation and then, when they had the ball, they were dangerous. Honestly, I think Brighton were very, very good. They gave us probably the hardest match we've had this season. I think we had more spirit and heart than quality."
