Man Utd in the Europa League: Getting to Know Saint-Etienne as Pogba Prepares to Meet His Brother

Published on: 11 December 2016

Manchester United will have to get the better of Saint-Etienne if they are to keep progressing in the Europa League this season after being paired with the French side in Monday's draw for the Last 32.

Here's a run through of some helpful information about February's opponent.

Their History

Although Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon and Marseille have been the domestic heavyweights of French football in recent memory, Saint-Etienne have actually won more Ligue 1 titles than any other club and are historically the most successful side in France's football history.

The reason why they are not considered to be a big name today is that the majority of that success (10 Ligue 1 titles, 6 Coupe de France triumphs) came in a relatively short space of time between 1957 and 1981. Their most recent success was winning the Coupe de la Ligue in 2013 - a first major trophy in 32 years.

Saint-Etienne are in the Europa League this season by virtue of finishing 6th in Ligue 1 last season.

How They Reached This Stage

That 6th place finish earned Saint-Etienne a place in the third qualifying round of the Europa League and they successfully saw off AEK Athens and then Beitar Jerusalem in the playoff round that followed to make it through to the group stage.

The club was subsequently drawn into Group C with Anderlecht, Mainz and Azerbaijan's Gabala, finishing with the same number of points (12) that United did in Group A. They were unbeaten, though, winning three and drawing three of their six fixtures.

Domestically, Saint-Etienne have had a mixed season. They currently sit 8th in Ligue 1 after 17 games (W4, D7, L6) and have only found the net at an average rate of once per game. They have, however, only conceded 14 times which is bettered only by PSG and league leaders Nice.

It must also be noted that of all the 24 teams that progressed from the group stage only Schalke (3) and United themselves (4) conceded fewer than Saint-Etienne (5).

Past Encounters With United

United have encountered Saint-Etienne just once before, meeting over two legs in an early round of the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners' Cup during the 1977/78 campaign.

Forgettable one-time Tottenham manager Jacques Santini was part of the Saint-Etienne setupback then, as was former France international winger Dominique Rocheteau (pictured) who now serves as the club's sporting director.

United prevailed in the first round tie after drawing 1-1 in France and then claiming a 2-0 victory in the return leg courtesy of goals from Stuart Pearson and Steve Coppell. But what's interesting about that is that the game was actually played in Plymouth rather than at Old Trafford as United were banned from playing within 200km of home because of crowd trouble in France.

Pogba vs Pogba

For world record summer signing Paul Pogba, the tie takes on a personal aspect as his older brother Florentin has played for Saint-Etienne since 2012 after joining the club from Sedan.

Florentin, a full international with Guinea, is three years older than Paul and their respective careers have taken quite different paths up to now.

While Paul walked out on Manchester United to chase first-team opportunities at Juventus, Florentin was let go by Celta Vigo at the age of 18. He managed to impress enough at Sedan on trial to earn a professional contract in 2009 and spent 18 months in the first team after a 2011 debut before earning his move to Saint-Etienne.

Although not a regular in Ligue 1 this season, Florentin featured in five of the club's six Europa League games so farand has played the majority of his football at centre-back. He is also versatile enough to operate as a left-back.
