Man Utd Legend Gary Neville Explains Why Poor Recent Form Could Be a Good Thing for the Reds

Published on: 05 February 2017

Former Manchester United man, Gary Neville, has provided some unlikely words of positivity for Liverpool fans as the side continue their worst ever run under Jurgen Klopp with just one win in 2017.

Having already lost to Bournemouth, Burnley, Wolvesand Swansea this season, Liverpool continuedtheir habit of struggling against lesser sides with a 2-0 loss to Hull City.

Despite starting the game off well, yet another Simon Mignolet error gifted Hull the lead and sent the Reds on their way out of the top four.

Liverpool had a period where they could pick the same side, they had that week to prepare," Neville toldSky Sportsafter the game.

The minute that that squad hit three games a week, with the way that they play, was always going to hurt them. You cannot play that way three times a week.

When you are leaving six players back at base, it causes disruption, it disrupts the squad and the squad isn't good enough."

Liverpool will get stronger as the season goes on," Neville continued.

"Now they are out of the cups, they are back to that period where they will have a week between games, and that is when they get can get their energy up and become devastating."

The good run of form at the start of the season saw Klopp's side become title contendersas they briefly led the way in the race. However, losing key players such as Sadio Mane and PhilippeCoutinho proved too difficult for the Reds to deal with.

The Sky Sports pundit added: "Next season, when they potentially get back into Europe, they will have to strengthen the squad.

With just under half of the season still left to go, Liverpool now have a fight on their hands to qualify for the Champions League with both Manchester clubs making things difficult at the moment.

Unfortunately for Klopp, with so many problem areas in the squad in need of repair, European qualification may be vital for the Reds if they are to attract any of their key targets over the summer in order to have a better season next time around.
