Man Utd Star Pushing for 2-Year Extension to Current Deal After Stellar Debut Season

Published on: 01 March 2017

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is keen to sign a new two-year contract with the club after impressing during his first season in English football, reports the Mirror.

The Swedish striker, 35, has allayed fears that he may not be able to cut it in the Premier League because of his age by firing 26 goals in all competitions for United so far. His influence was particularly evident during Sunday's EFL Cup final, as he scored twice to seal a 3-2 Unitedwin over Southampton.

After the game and in the days since, Ibrahimovic and his agent Mino Raiola have remained coy over what the player's plans are beyond the end of this season - with a number of clubs in Major League Soccer interested in signing him. It has also been reported that Ibrahimovic is keen to join a Champions League club, though the player himself shot such talk down.

Zlatan initially signed a one-year deal with United with an option to extend for a second season, and as it stands at the moment his contract does expire at the end of June. The club and United boss Jose Mourinho are keen to keep Ibrahimovic, but the player's representatives want improved terms for the player and another year on top of the proposed season-long extension.

He currently pockets £300,000-a-week, and negotiations are set to continue between the club and the player over the next few months as a deal that suits all parties is sought out.

If Ibrahimovic's representatives end up getting their wish - the two-year extension - the contract would see the player stay at Old Trafford until the age of 37.
