A rift is developing inside Everton between powerbrokers Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright.
The Mirror says billionaire businessman Moshiri's determination to recruit a big name is at odds with Kenwright's belief that a hungry, young British boss – in the mould of Burnley's Sean Dyche – would be a better fit for the club.
Sources claim Moshiri has been “going it alone" after taking the decision to sack Ronald Koeman last month.
The insider said: “It was clear that Silva was Moshiri's choice and he has made it clear that he will decide on the next manager.
“Watford were adamant from the outset that they weren't prepared to lose Silva mid-season. And while Silva's head was turned, he also realised it would be folly to walk out of a job so soon after being appointed.
“What happens at the end of the season is another matter."
