Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview: History, Team News, Key Battles and More

Published on: 09 December 2016

Manchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford on Sunday for what could be a pivotal match for both side's title chances this season.

Jose Mourinho's Red Devils are already 13 points off the top spot this season, and after three consecutive draws in their last three games, another set of dropped points this weekend could spell the end for their title challenge, and perhaps a top four place.

Mauricio Pochettino's side could jump into the top four momentarily with a win away in Manchester, and having already beaten City comfortably this season, Spurs will be confident they can claim another big scalp heading into Christmas.

Classic Encounter

Pochettino will be hoping that the game doesn't go the same way that it did towards the end of the 2014/15 campaign, as then manager Louis van Gaal's side put three past Spurs in the opening 35 minutes in a fantastic first half display.

Probably the best performance of his short and controversial tenure at the club, Van Gaal's men hit the back of the net in the opening 10 minutes with Marouane Fellani, while Michael Carrick scored a rare goal just 10 minutes later.

Wayne Rooney got on the score sheet in the 35th minute and performed his memorable boxing fall celebration following reports he was knocked out by a friend at his home during a day off from training.

Spurs didn't register a shot on target until the 89th minute, and Pochettino will be keen to forget this previous result with a confident display at Old Trafford.

Team News

For United,Eric Bailly could be set to start after returning from injury, potentially replacing Marcos Rojo in the back four.

Michael Carrick was rested in the Europa League, so he appears a certain starter, butLuke Shaw and Chris Smalling look set to be ruled out once again.

In the Spurs camp,Toby Alderweireld returned from a leg injury to play 22 minutes against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night and would seem likely to return to the starting XI for the trip to Old Trafford.

Vincent Janssen (ankle) and Erik Lamela (rib) remain sidelined, though Ben Davies (ankle) is fit again from the bench.

Key Battles

Eric Bailly vs Harry Kane

Returning to the side after a knock at the start of the season, Eric Bailly could be rushed back by Mourinho to settle a defence that has been conceding for fun this season, meaning that Spurs' Harry Kane could find spaces against the French international who is lacking a lot of match fitness.

Should the Englishman show his physicality in the early moments, it could be a long afternoon for Bailly.

Paul Pogba vs Victor Wanyama

The battle of two huge men, this could determine the outcome of this match. When Paul Pogba is given space in and around the box he can change and control a game, but if Wanyama wants his side to get on the front foot, his job will be to pressurise the world's most expensive player.

He won't have a lot to do going forward, but his job in front of the back four could frustrate United's attacking forces at home once more.

Prediction: 1-1

Despite both side's win in mid-week, this one won't get going and could be a very tight affair with what's at stake. A loss can see both sides lose ground on the top four and the title chase, for Mourinho more than Pochettino, and with United's inability to finish games off, much like at Everton, Spurs could claw their way back in the dying moments.
