Maritzburg Utd tie Richard Ofori down to a one-year contract extension

South African side Maritzburg United has extended the contract of Ghanaian shot-stopper Richard Ofori for an additional year, footballghana.com can report.

The Black Stars asset has been impressive for the club particularly in the 2019/2020 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season before it was suspended due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Having made 24 appearances in the division, Richard Ofori conceded 17 goals and kept 10 clean sheets in the process.

Though the season has been put on hold, his exploits had attracted interest from PSL giants Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundews who are looking to boost their squad before the campaign resumes.

Knowing that the goalkeeper could leave for free in the summer when his contract expires, Maritzburg United has exercised its option to renew the contract of the player for one more year.

According to Farook Kadodia who is the chairman of the club, it would have been stupid if the club failed to make use of that clause in the contract of the former Wa All Stars goalie.

“As a businessman, you have to take your options on a player like Ofori, if you don’t do that then you are stupid”, he said.

He added, “Ofori has been good to us since he arrived here and now we have shown our appreciation.”

Maritzburg United will now hope Sundowns and Pirates will end their chase of the Ghanaian goalkeeper.
