Martinez reveals extent of Vertonghen injury

Published on: 05 October 2018

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is set to be out of action for between four and six weeks, according to Belgian boss Roberto Martinez.

Vertonghen suffered the injury in Spurs' 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town on Saturday at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Belgian defender was hauled off at half-time in West Yorkshire and was then forced to sit out Tottenham's 4-2 Champions League defeat at the hands of Barcelona on Wednesday.

Martinez has now confirmed Vertonghen, who is already out of Belgium's upcoming games with Switzerland and the Netherlands, could be out of action for up to six weeks.

The news comes as a big blow for Tottenham, as they will have to do without the 31-year-old for some key encounters.

West Ham at the London Stadium, Manchester City at home and the two Champions League matches against PSV Eindhoven are coming up and manager Mauricio Pochettino could have to do without one of his star defenders.

Next up for Pochettino and Spurs is a home encounter against strugglers Cardiff City, who are yet to secure a win in the Premier League this season.

Spurs are 2/9 to win, 6/1 to draw and 14/1 to lose to Neil Warnock's side at Wembley on Saturday.
