Mauricio Pochettino Claims Tottenham Hotspur Can Become 'One of the Best' Teams in World Football

Mauricio Pochettino has said that he believes Tottenham Hotspur can become 'one of the best' teams in world football as he celebrated a century of matches in charge.

The Spurs manager took charge of his 100th game of the Lilywhites in Saturday's slender 1-0 win over Middlesbrough - a result that kept Tottenham hanging onto the coattails of runaway league leaders Chelsea.

Pochettino's side came close to winning the Premier League last season, but collapsed in the final few weeks of the campaign to allow Leicester City to win an unprecedented first league title.

Speaking to the Daily Mail after the victory at White Hart Lane, Pochettino was asked what would he accept as success in his next 100 matches in charge, and the Argentine revealed that silverware and taking Tottenham to the top of world football would be crowning achievements for him and his players.

He said: "A few trophies, that will be perfect. We need time to try to create a strong team, a strong club, a winning mentality, we need to finish the new stadium.

"At that point we will be ready to fight like now but with more tools and to be one of the best teams in the world. I think Tottenham deserve that respect. That opinion or that feeling makes us very proud. It motivates and inspires us to go forward and try to push more.

"We need to be focused on every competition - to try to go as far as possible. We need to try to win the Premier league, the FA Cup and the Europa League, that has to be our focus."

Spurs now sit second behind Chelsea in the league standings after the Blues beat their North London rivals Arsenal 3-1 on Saturday, but the gap between the two sides remains at nine points despite Tottenham's triumph over Boro.

Pochettino has already admitted that the title is Chelsea's to lose even with 14 matches still left to play, and he explained that it was the Blues' lack of European football, coupled with their talented squad, that had seen them enjoy such a healthy points margin over their rivals.

He added: "They have a very good team, very good players, a great manager.

"When you are focused only on the Premier League, you are not focused or involved in different cups, or not involved in Europa League competitions, and with the squad they have, they don't surprise me."
