Real Madrid Champions League winner Steve McManaman says Chelsea will struggle in Europe next season.

The Blues will return to the Champions League after a year-long absence as they close in on their second title in three years.

McManaman told BT Sport: “I look at all the Premier League and say it's quite average.

“When you compare the English teams in the Champions League this year we're way behind the top teams across Europe.

“They're as consistent as you like, very tough to beat, play real quality football, I think we're way behind.

“I think Chelsea are going to be more difficult to beat but I think the Chelsea now wouldn't be anywhere near the teams that are still left in the Champions League.

“If they go and improve and buy players in the summer, then possibly [they can reach the quarter-finals]."
