Missing Out on Barcelona Star 'Biggest Regret' of Zinedine Zidane's Managerial Career

Published on: 04 January 2017

Zinedine Zidane's first year in charge of Real Madrid has been wildly successful both on the pitch and off it - winning the Champions League and the Club World Cup as well as tying Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale down to long-term contracts - but reports in Spain suggest he has at least one regret so far.

That comes in the form of a missed transfer, with notorious Spanish rumourmongersDon Balonclaiming that the former France international is mourning the decision to let Barcelona sign Samuel Umtiti in the summer without any real (or Real...ahem) competition.

The France centre back has established himself as a popular figure at the Nou Camp already, just six months after his £20.6m move from Lyon in the summer - and Zidane is said to be starting to get twitchy over his own defensive options.

With Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Rafael Varaneto choose from in the centre of his defence, it's believed that Real chose not to chase after Umtiti; but the club could live to regret that decision, with Pepe believed to be ready to depart in the summer at the age of 34 after a decade of service.

The exit of Portugal's Euro 2016 hero would leave a gaping hole in the reigning European Champions' defence which 23-year-old Umtiti would have been perfectly placed to fill, were he not already playing under Luis Enrique.

A shock cross-Clasico switch for Umtiti in the summer is about as likely as Zidane growing a full mullet, leaving the Frenchman to scratch his head and look for alternative options as the summer - and the end of Real's transfer ban - approaches.
