Morata passes Atletico medical

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata is looking forward to returning to Spain after passing a medical with Atletico Madrid.

The former Juventus and Real Madrid star will join the La Liga side on an 18-month loan agreement after enduring a difficult time at Stamford Bridge.

Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in 2017 and scored 16 goals in 47 Premier League appearances for the club.

However, he only found the net five times in the Premier League this season and has not featured in Maurizio Sarri's first-team plans since the FA Cup third-round victory against Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

Morata said after having his medical: "Everything went well. I am very happy, I've spent days waiting for this.

"I began my career at Atletico and the people who know where I come from and know my history know what this means for me. The past is the past and it cannot be changed and I am very proud of it. I am looking forward to everything being completed so I can start training with my team-mates."

Atletico are second in La Liga and have won through to the last 16 of the Champions League. Morata is set to replace Diego Costa, who is currently recovering from foot surgery, in the Atletico side.

Atletico Madrid are 20/1 to win the Champions League this season, while Real Madrid can be backed at 12/1 and Juventus at 13/2.

Meanwhile, Sarri completed the loan capture of Gonazalo Higuain from AC Milan earlier this week.
