NAPOLI: MERTENS OVERTAKES MARADONA

Published on: 24 October 2019

Dries Mertens could be forgiven for basking in the moment after his two goals against Red Bull Salzburg helped Napoli claim three big Champions League points – and sent him into second place in the club's list of all-time highest scorers. Mertens has reached 116 goals in a Napoli jersey and he has surpassed Maradona (115). The Azzurri forward is now closing on Marek Hamsik’s record of 121.

“I'm delighted with these two goals because it earns me a place in Napoli's record books – something I've very proud of,” the Belgian declared. “I've overtaken Diego [Maradona, who's the all-time idol of this city, and now I hope to catch Marek [Hamsik], who is five goals away. I haven't said anything to Marek but I hope to overtake him soon, maybe by Christmas. This achievement is obviously a personal joy for me but it's also for the team because I always put Napoli's result before me. It was important for us to start winning on the road again as it's a great morale boost.”
