Newcastle midfielder Shelvey: Ignoring fans taunts key to form reversal

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey says key to his improved form has been ignoring opposition fans.

Shelvey turned in a man-of-the-match show on Sunday against Manchester United. He ran the midfield and rattled the Old Trafford giants with his work-rate and snappy tackles.

He said: “I feel like I'm doing well in terms of my aggression. I just think it all stems from wanting to win, instilled in me as a young boy."

Speaking about games in the past, but not Sunday's clash, he revealed: “I've been called 'disabled', I've been called 'cancer head' on a football pitch. But I'm not one to report it. What happens on the football pitch, to me, stays on the football pitch then you shake hands at the end of the game.

“It would now take something really bad to properly lose my head — if it was something about my kids or something like that.

“The penny has dropped now. I know what is right and wrong on and off the pitch. It's probably taken a lot longer than it should do to sink in."
