Published on: 11 January 2017

La Liga stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two of sportshighest earners on the planet, but compared to other personalities, their sponsorship deals hardly come close.

Ronaldo, particularly, had a superb year. The 31-year-old won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madridand then went on to conquerEurope at international level with Portugal. His exploits saw him earn the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, as well as the inaugural FIFA Best Male Footballer award for2016.

Messi did not have as quite grand a 12 months, but did win the La Liga trophy with his club Barcelona.

Regarding endorsements, though, the two players were far off the top. TheLondon School of Marketing have looked into2016 Sports Marketing Power List, and this week released their data.

The list shows how much money the world's top stars earned from sponsorship deals last year.

Roger Federer, somewhat shockingly, came out on top with £49.2m in sponsorship earnings, whileCleveland Cavaliers forward Lebron James came in second with £44.3m

Ronaldo and Messi are ninth and 11th on the list, having earned £26.2m and £23m respectively. They can only match Federer by putting their earnings together, as it adds up to to exactly what the tennis star made.
