PHOTOS: Mike Dean Combines Being a Referee With an Entertainer to Create Something Truly Magical

Published on: 19 December 2016

The Premier League is an unforgiving arena, especially for referees; their every move is analysed and while they might get each decision in any given game correct, it's always the ones they get wrong that are remembered.

That's why it's important - nay, VITAL - that we celebrate those moments when referees are able to remind us that hey, they're only human and that theylike to have a laugh as much as the rest of us.

Step forward Mike Dean aka the one-man show.

Taking officiating to hitherto unprecedented levels, he's been able to cultivate an on-field persona that is both entertaining AND efficient, combing the stern qualities required of any top-level ref with an almost clown-like joie de vivre.

Already (in)famous for his exaggerated mannerisms and bizarre signalling, during Monday night's Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park, he added a new trick to his cartoonish arsenal; ladies and gentleman, may we present to you the 'no-look' booking:

Yep. That's Everton's Ross Barkley getting a yellow card, not Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

As if that wasn't already more than enough joviality for one evening, Dean then somehow managed to outdo himself; with 12 minutes left on the clock, Roberto Firmino squared the ball to Adam Lallana and, realising he was very much in the way, Dean did what Dean does:

Ladies and gentleman, here's how you truly sell a dummy.

The game itself was pretty uneventful, with Sadio Mane the sole goalscorer in what was a typically feisty derby; the goal came very late on (in the 94th minute to be exact), but all fans were talking about afterwards was that man Dean.

Mike Dean is the best PL referee ever. Such a strange man

Mike Dean should've sent Barkley like but that dummy was elite and somewhat makes up for it. A 7/10 from me.

Mike dean is a proper legend 
