Premier League Completely Snubbed in UEFA Team of the Year as Real Madrid Clean Up

Published on: 04 January 2017

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann are just three of the illustrious band of footballers selected in UEFA's Team of the Year.

The side, voted for by 650,000 fans, is dominated by La Liga players, with eight of the 11 plying their trade in the Spanish top-flight, with four from Champions League winners Real Madrid alone - Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Meanwhile, Madrid's bitter rivals Barcelona are strongly represented with Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta joining Messi in the impressive ensemble of European football's best.

The team is completed by Gianluigi Buffon, Jerome Boateng and Leonardo Bonucci.

Ramos, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, received more votes than any other player with a whopping 488,000, while teammate Ronaldo was selected for a record 11th time.

The previous shortlist included the likes of Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Riyad Mahrez, but none of the Premier League's finest made the final cut. Other notable absentees are Neymar, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale, illustrating just how difficult it is to be selected - thus further highlighting Ronaldo's stunning haul of 11 appearances.
