Pursuit of Talented Valencia Full-Back Is an Indication Wenger Plans to Extend Arsenal Contract

Published on: 20 December 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger appears to have given the clearest indication yet that he'll be looking to stay at the clubbeyond the end of his current contract, by starting his pursuit of a new long-term answer at left back.

The likes of Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs have filled the position for the Gunners over the last few seasons, but Wenger is now looking to bring in Valencia's talented Spaniard Jose Gaya ahead of the next campaign.

And the fact that Wenger is planning for the future, theMirrorsuggests, is an indicator that he doesn't yet feel ready to leave the club he joined more than 20 years ago.

Wenger's current contract expires in the summer of 2017, though the fan base is divided at the moment over whether the Frenchman should stay or go. A certain section of the club's faithful, dubbed the 'Wenger Out Brigade' believe the current boss should have given somebody else an opportunity at the job several years ago.

67-year-old Wenger has not yet given any official indications about what his plans are beyond the end of the current campaign, and his uncertainty is also believed to be a sticking point in the ongoing contract negotiations for first team stars Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. Both of Arsenal's key men have a mere 18 months left on their current deals.

The report from the Mirror claims that Wenger's pursuit of Gaya is some kind of proof that he's looking to continue his dynasty, and it also carries an indication that Wenger could be given a new two-year contract by the club in the coming months.
