Interviewed by El Español, Aurelio Sanchez, father of former Spanish international attacking midfielder/winger and Real Betis captain Joaquín (37), revealed: "Before he joined Valencia, back in 2006, he had already agreed a move to Chelsea, which was trained by José Mourinho, at that time. Betis would have cashed 36 million euros from the trade, and 3 more for a friendly match. Joaquín, on his hand, was supposed to be signed on a 5-year deal, including a 6 million euros annual salary. While he was in Madrid, I called him and booked him on the first fly available to Sevilla, for my son to seal the deal. He could have made a fortune, but he never traded for money only. Few weeks later, he decided he didn't want to leave Spain, so he joined Valencia".
