Real Madrid Boss Slams Sevilla Ultras Over Abuse Aimed at Former Star in Copa Del Rey Draw

Zinedine Zidane has lashed out at sections of Sevilla's support after they subjected former star Sergio Ramos to vitriolic abuse on Thursday.

The Real Madrid defender was barracked during the Copa del Rey match at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium after he had sparked widespread fury in front of Sevilla's ultras following a penalty in the 3-3 round of 16 second-leg draw.

A bottle was thrown from the stand and chants of 'Ramos, kill yourself' rained down from the stand after the centre back's panenka spot kick and subsequent celebration.

Ramos spent one full season with Sevilla after he had risen through the youth ranks of the Andalusian outfit before he completed a 2005 summer switch to Real and, in comments published by Goal following the clash, Zidane insisted that Sevilla's fanbase should have shown more restraint to their former star.

He said: "I can't be happy with that and neither is he, but it's not something we can avoid.

"He didn't do anything major, he played his game. He's not happy, for sure, because he played here, he's from here, and I'm sure he's hurt. We have to think that sometimes these things happen but I'm not happy for his family, either."

Sergio Ramos will retire as Real Madrid's greatest ever defender, not in terms of actual defending, but in terms of influence and legacy.

Ramos offered his apologies to the rest of the stadium following his celebration, and claimed afterwards that he had not disrespected anyone by cupping his ears in the direction of Sevilla's ultras.

Away from the nasty scenes that followed Ramos' goal, Real secured a place in the quarter-finals of the domestic cup competition with a 6-3 aggregate victory over their La Liga counterparts.

Los Blancos held a 3-0 lead from the first-leg of the tie, but found themselves 3-1 down with 13 minutes remaining before Ramos and Karim Benzema made sure of their progression to the last eight - a result that ensured that Real set a new all-time record of 40 matches unbeaten by a Spanish side.

Quizzed about his side's performance after the game, Zidane admitted that Sevilla arguably deserved more from the match, and stated that his side had "suffered" from a gruelling contest.

He added: "They maybe deserved more but we relaxed a little after our first goal. At the end we thought that we could get the draw but I think in general that we deserved to go through. We suffered a lot, I think. They put speed in everything they do with the players they have, and with a packed crowd.

"It will be another match of suffering on Sunday but they are second in the table for a reason. It's all on their own merit. We'll see what the game will be like, but we'll suffer, that's for sure."
