Real Madrid's 40-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end when the league leaders went down 2-1 away from home to Sevilla on Sunday night.

The visitors took the lead midway through the second half when Cristiano Ronaldo fired home from the penalty spot after Dani Carvajal had been taken down by goalkeeperSergio Rico in the area.

But two late goals, one courtesy of Madrid defender and captain Sergio Ramos who fired a header into his own net, and the other from a long-rangescreamer by new signing Stevan Jovetic, saw the home side take all three points and claim payback for their Copa del Rey exit earlier in the week.

It was a tight but entertainingopening in an almost derby-like atmosphere at theRamon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium during a fixture which has provided55 goals in the past 11 meetings.

As the half went on the hosts managed to find their rhythm which has seen them become arguably the most exciting team in La Liga this season.

But neither side were able to create a clear opening as the only notable goal-bound action came from Ronaldo and SamirNasri, but both attemptswere comfortably saved by Rico and Keylor Navas respectively.

That was until the world's best player, who struggled in the opening exchanges as part of a front two alongside Karim Benzema, was supplied by thelatter with the half's best chance.

The Frenchman rounded his opponent and drilled the ball across the face of goal into a dangerous area, but the 31-year-old Portugal international could not get enough purchase on the cross six yards from goal and dragged his shot wide.

Inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half Navas produced a great save down low to his right afterWissam Ben Yedder found himself in spaceto run on goal behind the visitors defencewhich resulted fromsilky build up play by Sevilla.

The 26-year-oldfired his stinging effort across the face of goalin the game's best chance but the effortwas well stopped by the Madrid custodian.

Midway through the half Benzema had a superb chance to put the hosts after receiving the rebound to his first effort, but the 29-year-old could only blaze his shot over the bar from close range.

Just moments later DaniCarvajal charged through on goal after stealing possession from SergioEscudero and rounding AdilRami but the Spaniardwas felled by the onrushingSevilla goalkeeper Rico before being able to take his shot.

The referee made no hesitation in pointing to the spot, much to the displeasure of the home supporters, and Ronaldo stepped up todispatch inch-perfectly into the bottom left handcorner from 12 yards.

With just five minutes to go Sevilla-bornRamos, who had been chastised by the homecrowdall evening, turned substitute PabloSarabia'sdeliciousfree-kick into his own net after Marcelo had wiped out Mariano on the right-hand touchline, sending the home support into delirium.

The hosts continued to press in the dying moments afterunsettling the earliersturdy Madrid defence, and new boy, and ex-Manchester City striker, Joveticprovided the perfect ending for the majority of the 40,000 in attendance.

The 27-year-old picked the ball up just over the half way line and surged towards goal before unleashing a thunderbolt into Navas' bottom right hand corner causingthe Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium toerupt.

The result sees the league leaders lose their five pointadvantage over their nearest rivals and puts Sevilla up to second, just one point off topand in contention of providing a huge title upset.
