Red Devils Ace Henrikh Mkhitaryan Denies Joining Manchester United for Money

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has hit back at critics who suggested that he only joined Manchester Unitedfor the money, according to a report inSky Sports.

The Armenian international joined the famed Red Devils from Borussia Dortmund for £26.3m in the summer of 2016.

The deal was described as 'incredibly lucrative' with some reports in Germany claiming that his salary would be trebled and he would be on the receiving end of a hefty signing-on-fee.

The 27-year-old denies this however and has hit back at previous criticism from Dortmund CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke:

"I can't understand it. It is wrong. If it was only about money for me, I would have moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to Anzhi Makhachkala and not to Borussia Dortmund. But I didn't want that. I wanted to develop myself further."

Watzke described Mkhitaryan's move to Old Trafford as 'odd' and said he was 'disappointed' that the Armenian hadn't taken a penalty in last season's German Cup Final, which Dortmund lost on penalties to Bayern Munich.

Mkhitaryan hit back by saying that: "I would have scored a penalty in Berlin. But there's a coach and 11 players on the pitch and we discussed who would take one. If he wants to assess me on the basis of one game, that's wrong. He's probably forgotten what I did the whole season before."

The 2016 Armenian footballer recorded 20 assists in all competitions for Dortmund in 2015/2016 and scored 23 goals.

After a tough start to life at Old Trafford, Mkhitaryan has starred in recent performances and admitted that he was happy to see Bastian Schweinsteiger back in the first team:

"I'm glad he's getting his chance again. He knows exactly what to do on the pitch. I can only report positively about him; he's got a great character."
