Retired African stars propose ‘life after football’ fund

Retired players and African football legends have proposed the setting up of a Life after football fund by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

This, according to the retired stars, will help take care of old players who go into distress after their active playing days.

The legends made their proposal at the African Football Symposium held in Rabat, Morocco last week.

Led by former Ghanaian international, Anthony Baffoe, the legends and retired players told CAF that they were ready to come together annually to play to raise money for the proposed fund.

“The story of retired players in particular needing help every now and then is the reason why we are proposing the fund so there will be help readily available when needed.

“We have agreed to come together to play charity games every year to raise money to provide funds for that purpose.

“The modalities will be sorted once the proposal is accepted,” Mr Baffoe, who is also the Founder and General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), explained to the Graphic Sports.

“Who remembers the Marc Vivien-Foes, or who will remember Cheick Tiote in a few months? While we forget them, what happens to their immediate families?”

According to Baffoe, the legends and retired players had also decided to replicate in their countries, the setting up funds for players just as the PFAG has done where professional footballers have been brought together and made to make monthly contributions towards the fund.

“Footballers must not just think of themselves when they are active. They have to also think of their lives after football and that is why we have to make the PFAs strong in our respective countries.”
