REVEALED: Fans Vote for the Best Spanish Player in the Premier League This Season

Published on: 01 December 2016

Spain, that most romantic of footballing nation whose stars imported into the Premier League are always valued in so much higher esteem than anyone home-grown.

There are currently a number of top Spanish players plying their trade in England's top flight, and the results of a 90min poll can now reveal who supporters believe to be the best around.

Close to42,000 fans made their voice heard, and it was in-form Chelsea striker Diego Costa who topped the final results with 35% of the total vote.

The naturalised Spaniard has had a direct hand in 14 Premier League goals in just 13 games so far this season, scoring 10 of his own - no one has scored more - and laying on four assists for grateful team-mates to help Chelsea top the standings.

This is a Costa re-born after he looked destined to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, but new manager Antonio Conte has got the best out of him and he's shown once more that he is virtually unplayable when at his very best.

Behind Costa, two Manchester United players accounted for 40% of the total vote as shot-stopper David de Gea and midfield maestro Juan Mata shared 20% each.

De Gea is still widely regarded as one of the very best goalkeepers in the world, while Mata has shaken off the speculation over his future at Old Trafford and has even captained United on more than one occasion in recent weeks.

At Arsenal, right-back Hector Bellerin had been going from strength to strength until being sidelined with a recent injury. The former Barcelona scholar was chosen as the Premier League's best Spanish player by 16% of the fans who voted in the 90min poll.

Manchester City favourite David Silva received 7% of the vote, while Middlesbrough's Alvaro Negredo was only backed by 2% of supporters following mixed form on his return to England.
