Revealed: How a phone call from Mikel Arteta on Sunday night propelled Thomas Partey to join Arsenal

On transfer deadline day on Monday, Arsenal finally signed their target all summer in the name of Thomas Partey.

Four months back, Footballghana.com team revealed that the 27-year-old will definitely join the Premier League side before the window ends.

FootballGhana's editor Samuel Ekow Amoasi Appiah said on The Transfer Exchange Show months before the window was open said, "As per a close source to Thomas Partey, the player wants to play for Arsenal.

"Expect Partey to play in Arsenal next season, expect him to be in England, I can assure you of that.

"Partey wants to play for Arsenal, he wants to be in England.

"Last week, I was told that [Michael] Essien has got in touch with him and I wouldn’t be surprised because close sources tell me that Partey wants to play in England and especially Arsenal.”

With two years left on his contract at Atletico Madrid, the La Liga side were confident the Ghana midfielder will stay and it came as a shock to the hierarchy of the club when Arsenal trigger the 45 million pounds release clause.

Diego Simeone's side were willing to offer Partey an improved contract on Monday but the camp of the player rejected the offer.

However, Footballghana.com can exclusively confirm that Partey knew he was going to join Arsenal on deadline day after the manager of the side, Mikel Arteta called him on Sunday night to inform him about the plans of the club on Monday.

Partey was impressed and convinced Arsenal is the right place for him. Yes, Chelsea were sniffing around after West Ham United stood that they were not going to sell Declan Rice this summer.

The Blues were sniffing and lurking around hoping to hijack the deal but Partey's move to the Gunners was sealed after the phone call from Arteta.

He was least paid player at the club and he believed joining the Premier League would be the best option for him. The dynamic midfielder will pocket £250,000 a week deal.

Partey's style of play is something Arteta admires and pushing for the signature of the midfielder on deadline day was something we expected it was going to happen. The club knew Partey will improve Arsenal and pushing for his signature on Monday night was something Partey and his camp was expecting.

During his career, Thomas has also enjoyed successful loan spells in Spain with RCD Mallorca (2013/14) and UD Almeria (2014/15) and has made 29 international appearances for Ghana.

Last season, the Ghana international made 46 appearances for Atletico, playing a key role in their third-place finish in La Liga and reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The 27-year-old midfielder had been with Atletico since 2012, making 188 appearances, in which time he won both the Europa League and Super Cup in 2018, and was a Champions League runner-up in 2016.
