Rodgers brushes off Dembele concerns

Published on: 19 July 2018

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers says the injury Moussa Dembele suffered in their Champions League win over Alashkert is not a cause for concern.

The Bhoys made light work of their Armenian opponents in the second leg of their European qualifier, matching the scoreline from last week's encounter as they ran out 3-0 winners at Celtic Park.

Dembele opened the scoring after just eight minutes and grabbed his second from the penalty spot on 19 minutes.

James Forrest added a third 10 minutes from half-time as the Scottish champions set up a second round qualifying encounter with Norwegian side Rosenborg.

The only dampener on the night for Celtic, other than Jozo Simunovic’s impending suspension following his straight red card on 11 minutes, was the sight of Dembele leaving the field on 65 minutes.

Rodgers does not believe the French forward's injury is anything to worry about though and appeared confident he would not miss any game time as a result.

He said: "He was tight at the back of his legs so we will need to assess that tomorrow and in the next couple of days.

"He is as fit as he has been since I've been here at this stage of the season so hope it was just a tightness and he will be okay."

Celtic beat Rosenborg 1-0 on aggregate in last year's Champions League qualifiers and Rodgers is expecting another close tie.

He said: "They were two tight games the last time we played and we got a goal late on to get through.

"They will come here and be nice and compact, like they were last year and we will need to be patient in that game and obviously it will be a tough game for us out there.

"But it is a tie we look forward to. At this stage of the season whoever, you get, you have to respect who you play."

Celtic start the defence of their Premiership title on 4th August against Livingston and are 10/11 for the win with a minus two handicap.

The Hoops are 1/10 to reclaim their Scottish title this season.
