Roma edge out Tottenham in thrilling friendly

Roma have defeated Tottenham 3-2 in their International Champions Cup clash at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Spurs thought they won themselves a draw when Vincent Janssen levelled the scores in the 91st minute, only for Marco Tuminello to snatch the win for Roma virtually straight after the restart.

Both sides started the match with strong starting XI's, but it was the Giallorossi who dominated the first half.

The Serie A side took a 1-0 advantage into the break after a strange penalty decision saw them convert from the spot.

The referee initially waved away cries for a handball after Dominic Carter-Vickers' arm got in the way of Rajda Nainggolan's cross.

However, the referee listened to the pleas of the Roma players and consulted with the fourth official, even though there is no VAR in these games.

The fourth official overturned the decision and Diego Perotti calmly slotted the ball home for the game's opening goal.

It was a strange and awkward moment in an otherwise lacklustre first half.

Eusebio di Francesco's side doubled their lead with 20 minutes remaining, as new signing Cenzig Under capitalised on Kevin Wimmer's shoddy clearance to slam the ball home past the helpless Hugo Lloris.

The game looked dead and buried until Harry Winks pulled one back out of nowhere for the north London side.

The 21-year old pounced after Janssen's toe poke ricocheted off the post, managing to squeeze the ball past Łukasz Skorupski.

Spurs felt the momentum swing and Georges-Kévin N'Koudou done brilliantly on the right wing to set up the equaliser.

The former Marseille winger skipped past the Roma defender and delivered a perfect ball for Janssen, with the Dutchman's poor touch managing to elude Skorpuski.

Spurs had scrapped through for a draw, until they didn't. Roma broke from the restart, and within seconds, Marco Tuminello latched onto a cross from the left wing after catching the Tottenham defence napping.

Tottenham have four days until they take on their Premier League rivals, Manchester City, in Nashville. While Roma get a chance to test themselves against their league rivals, Juventus, when the two face off in Massachusetts on July 31.
