The 31-year old made 77 appearances for the club as a teenager before making the move to Manchester United in 2004.

Now after an emotional homecoming, Rooney is determined to win Everton's first piece of significant silverware since their 1994 F.A Cup victory.

"(Winning trophies with Everton) would be the pinnacle," said Rooney.

"This football club should be winning trophies and we're taking huge steps to being involved and trying to win trophies.

"I firmly believe we have the potential to be a success in the league and there's the cup competitions.

"We're certainly capable of winning one of those cups.

"You have to take it step by step - it's a difficult set of fixtures to start the season, so we have to make sure we get a good pre-season so we're capable of starting well.
