Disgraced ex-England manager Sam Allardyce expressed disappointment and regret after leaving his role as national boss on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after an undercover investigation revealed shocking details following meetings with reporters posing as 'businessmen'.

"It was a great honour for me to be appointed back in July and I am deeply disappointed at this outcome," Allardyce explained in a statement released by the FA.

The 61-year-old, who brokered a £400k speaking deal for himself before offering his new acquaintances advice on bypassing third party transfer rules, spoke of his meeting with FA chiefs in the hours before his departure and offered his apology.

"This afternoon (Tuesday), I met with Greg Clarke and Martin Glenn and offered a sincere and wholehearted apology for my actions," he continued.

"Although it was made clear during the recorded conversations that any proposed arrangements would need The FA's full approval, I recognise I made some comments which have caused embarrassment.

"As part of today's meeting, I was asked to clarify what I said and the context in which the conversations took place. I have co-operated fully in this regard."

During the conversations with the undercover reporters, Allardyce had mocked England predecessor Roy Hodgson, as well as former assistant coach Gary Neville. He spoke of a number of individual players and criticised the 'psychology' of the Three Lions, as well as slamming the FA's financial choices regarding Wembley Stadium.

"I also regret my comments with regard to other individuals," he added.

Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate will lead the team for the next four games, which includes World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia within the next two weeks, before the FA makes a permanent appointment.
